Botox® vs. Filler: Which Injectable is Right for You? | Greensboro, NC

As the cosmetic world has evolved, the artistry of injectable enhancements has allowed millions to reclaim and maintain their youthful radiance. Neurotoxins, like Botox®, and dermal fillers have risen to the top as the most popular age-defying injectables for any stage of life. While both treatments can work together to create a more balanced profile, they each serve their own purpose.

To determine which injectable is right for you, consider your concerns, the areas you want to treat and your overall aesthetic goals:

Purpose: Relax muscle movement vs. add volume

  • Botox is a purified protein which blocks nerve impulses and temporarily relaxes wrinkle-rousing facial muscles when injected into the skin. Botox works with incredible ease to reduce wrinkle formation as well as prevent current wrinkles from deepening.
  • Dermal fillers are smooth gels, often made with a modified form of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps cells retain moisture. When injected into specific areas of the skin, fillers add volume to fill in folds, creases and deep wrinkles.

Treatment areas: Upper face vs. lower face

  • Botox is FDA approved to smooth the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines. While it has many other areas of application, Botox is primarily used to reduce dynamic wrinkles in the upper and mid face that appear over time from continuous facial movement.
  • Dermal fillers are commonly used for treating concerns of lost volume, folds and creases on the lower face, including nasolabial folds, thin lips, sunken cheeks, loss of jawline definition, marionette lines and chin creases.

Results: More temporary vs. long-lasting

  • Botox typically provides three to four months of natural-looking results, depending on individual factors like metabolism and muscle activity.
  • Dermal fillers offer anywhere from six months to two years of rejuvenation, depending on the type of filler, the area being treated and your body’s unique response.

Getting your best results with either treatment:

  • Avoid alcohol, NSAIDS like aspirin and other blood thinning-substances up to a week before and after your treatment to help reduce your risk of bruising.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours to help the product settle properly.
